Definition of Stress

There are so many causes and types of stress that it is hard to encompass the term in a single definition.

A simple definition of stress is, “physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension.”

A more specific definition says that stress is, “a specific response by the body to a stimulus, such as fear or pain, which disturbs or interferes with the normal physiological equilibrium of an organism.”

Since there can be any number of stimulus, the definition of stress also relies on the type of effects that is has on an individual’s body and mind; it all depends on the type of person receiving it. There are no known well-defined situations that create stress for a particular person; there is a combination of factors that will lead to stress and anxiety, and these combinations are different for everyone.

Stress can also be defined as a result of altered chemical secretions in the brain. These changes in secretions will create a state of altered mind, which is more often misdirected and confused. It is natural mechanism and an instinctive response to various unknown situations. Therefore, it is important for us to accept that stress is a part of life, and vital that we learn to effectively manage stress to escape its negative effects.

It may be surprising to learn that stress is not always bad for your health; certain levels of stress are considered normal, and contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Some people regard stress as a learning experience and emerge stronger once they’ve overcome the stressful situation. However, not everybody is capable of handling stress effectively and it becomes a problem when it begins taking control of your life.

It has been proven scientifically that individuals who often endure stressful situations have a higher probability of suffering physical and mental anguish, and are more likely to succumb to nervous breakdowns.

Although there are many types and definitions of stress, you will not find a definition that suggests it is a negative experience. Once you know how to adapt and handle stress, you will be able to learn a great deal from it. Stress can play an important role in making you a better human being.
