Managing Stress
There are a number of simple techniques that make managing stress easy.
Stress is a strange phenomenon and managing stress is challenging. It has the ability to add flavor and spice to your life – without stress your life would be uninspiring and boring – but once stress reaches a certain threshold level, your life can be subjected to repeating physical and physiological problems.
Without properly managing stress, you can see a decrease in self-esteem, professional performance and productivity, and ultimately result in a lack of confidence. Therefore, managing stress is extremely important in order to avoid potentially disastrous situations.
The following sections list some useful methods that can help you with managing stress:
Create a list of stressorsStressors are any events or situations that put you under pressure. You will need to write down all those events, situations and reasons that might be responsible for, or cause, stressful moments. You may also want to write down the level of stress caused by each of these stressors. Write down the effects of the stressor so you can quantify the effects.
Once you are able to identify your stressors, you’ve taken your first step in managing your stress.
Start taking control of your stressorsManaging stress is possible when you know how to take control over the stressors that apply pressure on you. It is definitely not possible to control each and every factor that causes stress; there are simply some factors and reasons that are out of your control, such as a terminal disease or a death in the family. However, you can control your reaction to such events by sheer willpower and determination.
Start by creating small changes in your life that are known to bring down the stress level. Each change you make on its own may not go far in reducing your overall stress, but once you’ve made a series of these small changes, your stress level should be noticeably lower.
Learn to reject some situationsIf there are certain situations that you know lead you to being stressful, reject and avoid them as much as possible. Managing stress is all about taking control of your own thinking processes and emotions. Never overload your mind with unnecessary plans or activities that have the potential of increasing the stress in your life.
Remember to be positive and develop self-confidence. These are the keys in managing your stress. You should remember that there will be situations that are unavoidable and out of your control so you will need to learn to deal with them. Deal with events as they come and don’t spend time worrying about what may happen to you.
