Causes of Stress

What causes stress?

There are many causes of stress and each individual gives distinct responses to the same types of stressful situations as others. A situation that creates extreme stress for person may provide mild stress for another. A third person may even find that particular situation not stressful at all.

It is often said that stress is the twentieth century syndrome; born out of the complexities of man’s race towards modern progress. Causes such as a delay in a flight to setting up a business meeting can result in stress.

Stressful conditions can be real or perceived. In either case, the reaction in our mind is similar by releasing certain hormones that are related to stress in amounts equal to the experienced stress levels. There is no differentiation between real and imagined stress by the brain. You can experience stress that is caused by real external factors, or simply by watching a suspenseful or scary movie.

The following lists some of the common causes of stress:

Life’s Circumstances

There are circumstances in our lives – usually out of our control – that can have a critical impact on our stress levels. Some examples of these are the death of a loved one, chronic health issues, divorce, workplace competition, and financial problems.

Even conditions such as a sudden lay-off from a job, or prolonged unemployment can result in a large amount of stress. Stress also comes from our emotional and psychological reactions to personal and social contexts. We build up a mental disposition over the years that decide whether we will accept certain situations with a fight or flight attitude. As a result, we may remain under the harmful influences of a stressful situation or be free from them altogether.

Women and children subjected to physical or mental abuse are known to suffer from higher stress symptoms such as anxiety, depression, anger, and other negative emotions.

Favorable attitude

Attitude is the reaction to a particular situation in life. You can avoid or increase a significant amount of stress symptoms by the way you react to stressors. Stress is not created by what has actually happened; instead it is created by how we think of what happened.

Your attitude is applied to all of life's' circumstances. If you react to problems with anger and frustration, you are bound to feel more stressed. If you react by having a relaxed attitude, and accept that there are some things out of your control, you will come to feel more happy and experience much less stress in your life.

A favorable attitude can make you resilient in the face of stressful situations.

Genes

Certain genes have been identified that control the three major endorphin groups in the human body, which are also known as stress hormones. Thus, our attitudes with respect to how we deal with physical, as well as emotional, stress can also be genetic. In other words, the way we handle stress today may in part be determined by how our parents or grand-parents responded to stress.

Adults that are stressed out are more likely to have children that will be ill prepared to handle stressors in a positive way.
